Formula Renault 2.0 NEC - Return to the Red Bull Ring
The Red Bull Ring is back on the calendar of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup. This weekend the Formula stars of the future will race on the Austrian Formula 1 circuit in the third of the seven raceweekends the series consists of. Instead of the usual two races, three races are on the programme this weekend.
With his double win at Silverstone two weeks ago, the Swiss Louis Delétraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing) has snatched the championship lead from Japanese Ukyo Sasahara (ART Junior Team). They are followed by Dennis Olsen (Manor MP Motorsport) and Callan O’Keeffe (Fortec Motorsports). Next is Ignazio D’Agosto (Manor MP Motorsport) in fifth place with the same number of point as the first rookie in the championship Max Defourny.
At the Red Bull Ring David Richert (Inter Europol Competition) gets a team-mate for the first time in 2015. The second car of the team of Michael Keese is driven by 18-year-old Spaniard Álex Palou Montalbo.
The only driver who races at his home track this weekend is rookie Ferdinand Habsburg (Fortec Motorsports). Habsburg feels confident that he is in a strong position to get a good result. Habsburg : “Red Bull Ring is my home track and I’ve recently tested there. It’s certainly my strongest track and I’ve never felt better inside the car. I’m really looking forward to racing there this weekend.”
So far the only races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup at the Red Bull Ring were back in 2012. At that time both victories went to the Josef Kaufmann Racing team. One victory went to GP2 ace Stoffel Vandoorne the other to Porsche Junior Alex Riberas. This year significantly faster lap times can be expected as in 2012 the FR2.0 cars were of the older generation.
The comeback at the Red Bull Ring is also the première of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup at the ADAC GT Masters. The starting grid for the third race is defined by the second-fastest laptimes set the first qualifying session.
